Green building certification systems are independent third body agencies that evaluate the green performance of a building. Some of the certifications used in Europe are BREEAM (Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method) from the UK, DGNB (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen e.V./ German Sustainable Building Council) from Germany, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) from the USA and HQE from France. The rating systems and weightings for criteria differ between these schemes and they are either limited to their country of origin or used internationally (e.g. LEED in the USA and Europe). In order to fulfill these criteria, specific materials should be used which are listed in various database such as greenbuildingproducts.eu for DGNB and LEED and greenbooklive.com for BREEAM. A number of building material database are accessible online in Europe.
To date, these systems are voluntary and have been developed through non-governmental or governmental organizations.
